Johannesburg, 1968. Sixteen-year-old Khuthala dreams of becoming a jazz musician, but his ambitions collide with the harsh realities of apartheid South Africa. A gifted young musician, he dreams of jazz, travel and a future shaped by his own talent.

The family business represents everything he wants to escape: routine, responsibility and a world narrowed by apartheid. But the laundry is far more than a workplace.

When Khuthala’s father is arrested and brutally beaten, the fragile balance holding the household together collapses. Khuthala is drawn into a devastating bargain that places his music, friendships and moral compass in conflict with the survival of those he loves. Writer-director Zamo Mkhwanazi approaches apartheid not as a distant history lesson, but as a system experienced through ordinary decisions: who may work, who may own, who must compromise, and what a young person is permitted to imagine.

The result is a gripping family drama in which oppression does not remain outside the home; it enters the workplace, reshapes relationships and turns even hope into a form of risk.

Ntobeko Sishi brings youthful intensity and vulnerability to Khuthala, a teenager caught between the promise of artistic freedom and the inheritance of a struggle he did not choose.
