In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dr Denis Mukwege enters an operating theatre knowing that medicine alone cannot answer the violence surrounding him. At Panzi Hospital, he treats women whose bodies have been used as weapons of war, restoring not only physical health but dignity in a country where conflict, silence and impunity have become brutally intertwined.

Inspired by the life and work of the Congolese gynaecologist who would receive the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize, Muganga: The One Who Treats follows Mukwege as the scale of the crisis forces him beyond the conventional boundaries of his profession. Every survivor he treats is evidence of a wider system of terror. Every public statement increases the danger to his colleagues, his patients and himself.

His encounter with Belgian surgeon Dr Guy-Bernard Cadière brings new expertise, resources and an unlikely friendship into the struggle. Together, the two doctors confront devastating injuries while gradually recognising that healing must be medical, psychological, social and legal. Their work becomes a form of resistance and Panzi Hospital a refuge whose influence reaches far beyond its walls.

Marie-Hélène Roux directs with a focus on moral courage rather than easy heroism. Isaach De Bankolé brings gravity and restraint to Mukwege, portraying a man sustained not by fearlessness but by a decision to keep acting despite fear. Produced by Cynthia Pinet and Angelina Jolie, the film asks what it means to bear witness when the world would prefer not to see.

Urgent and deeply humane, Muganga honours survivors while revealing how compassion, practised with persistence, can become a force against political violence.
